Not too far out from the National capital, as you drive off the busy freeway, be prepared to be startled as you enter the calm and green precincts of a large private estate. Close to 300 acres of farm and scrub land were greened by planting 2,00,000 trees over a couple of decades - a mammoth effort by Ashwani, Anu and the team. Today, this is Karma Lakelands - a restored urban sanctuary and an ideal getaway from the city, a haven for families, travellers beginning their sojourn in India and corporates looking for weekend team getaways.
Karma Chalets, a part of the Lakeland complex, is a cluster of studio, duplex suites and villas offering 30 rooms in all. A long winding drive from the gate of the complex takes you to one end of the estate far away from the clamour of the highway. Beautifully landscaped with pretty little gardens, each chalet is endearing in the way it is furnished - very English in its embellishments and colours - and extremely comfortable in the amenities it provides. Walk into a chalet to an intimate lounge, a simple pantry, en-suite bathrooms with fragrant amenities that lead to air-conditioned bedrooms.
A few steps away is 'The Lounge', which houses a European style cafe and is the perfect place to enjoy some downtime, catch up on some reading or mingle with interesting fellow travellers. Here is also 'The Ekant Spa' - a remedy for tired muscles and for those seeking revival from travel or week-day work fatigue.
The guests at the Chalets are privy to the facilities of 'Klub Karma', a large venue that encompasses a 9-hole golf course and state-of-the-art gym, tennis and squash courts, indoor heated pool and a generous outdoor one too. A multi-cuisine restaurant, banquet and conference venues also form a part of the Klub Karma complex with plenty of small outdoor venues which are perfect for intimate events.
Spend a weekend or a few days at the start of your journey here. There is plenty to do besides golf and the clubhouse services. Nature and birding walks, cycling around the vast acres, visiting the organic nursery, dairy and aviary etc. Night time is perfect for star gazers. Karma Day Care center, an NGO run for children of those working on the Lakelands, is worth a visit.
Karma Chalets has a dynamic manager - Akshya Sethi - closely monitored by the owners who ensure that the property is run with a sustainable ethos like minimizing the use of plastic and paper, practicing bio-composting and waste-water recycling. A stay here is a conscious effort to preserve and practice what Ashwani and Anu have built over the years and come away refreshed by nature, time and space.
