Know Your Host

Goipnath Parayil founded The Blue Yonder in 2004 as part of his journey to promote the unique river valley civilisation of Nila in Kerala (Bharatapuzha). A keen promoter of sustainability and a believer in social entrepreneurship, he transformed The Blue Yonder into a travel company that creates a...

The Blue Yonder is a social enterprise that uses travel as a tool for social change. Working on the concept of Gandhian Talisman, where business becomes a social platform to address challenges in society and pioneer change. This could range from designing a musical trail to working with fisherfolk to co-create climate resilience. All the experiences that guests immerse themselves in during the trails are a result of the metamorphoses of various initiatives that have been launched with community partners in the past two decades.

Depending on the trails, RARE hotels such as Cranganor History Café & Riverside Château and The Malabar House, by Malabar Escapes, are offered along with similar hotels in other areas where there isn’t a RARE hotel.

Dining
Meals are included in the trails.

Culinary experiences: An interactive culinary workshop to experience Tamil Cuisine through home cooking. This group of women launched a cloud kitchen during the pandemic to sustain themselves, which didn't continue post-pandemic. Here, guests can join a group of women to learn intimately about Tamil food culture and cook and dine together in one of their houses. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available.

Kalaripayattu, though known as the martial art from the state of Kerala, interestingly has a strong origin in the region that is now Tamil Nadu. The Pallava prince from Kanchivaram, Bodhidharma, was believed to have trained the monks of Shaolin Temple in physical exercises, resulting in the formation of Shaolin Kungfu. Sons of Sami Gurukkal run a traditional martial centre near Auroville, where guests can have an exclusive interactive session observing their practise and performances of this ancient art form where the whole body becomes the 'eye'.

Body Movement workshops involving Tai Chi, Kalari, Silambam, and theatre games: This three-hour interactive session with a martial artist, performer, and social activist introduces you to the basics of Silambam, Tai Chi, and Kalaripayattu to facilitate free-flowing body movement. Guests are invited to join the workshop via various folk expressions and theatre games. The venue is the studio of a special school for differently abled children, where the students also join as facilitators.

Heritage Walks in the French and Tamil Quarters, Puducherry: Run by in-house storytellers, these tours are not just about the historic buildings and their history. But it goes into legends and folklore and gives insights into lifestyles and all that makes Pondicherry special. These walks can also be combined to be done as two separate activities. The walk involves food tasting at some of Petrichor's personal favourites.

Dedicated workshop on the concept of Conscious Clothing: A social entrepreneur takes you through a journey of sustainable clothing and her twenty-five-year journey into fashion clothing. This session will also give you an idea of traditional weaving and the history of clothing in the region.

Musical Trail: An interactive session to learn more about folk-based Tamil musical traditions. This session focuses more on percussion and the folk performances associated with it. This initiative is a social enterprise trying to provide a livelihood with dignity while popularising traditional percussion instruments. Guests get an opportunity to try out most of these instruments and engage with artists in discussion on movements that are evolving globally and not only confined to Tamil Nadu.

Rural Pondicherry with a farm-cooked meal: Travellers hardly step out of the tourist circuits of Pondicherry; this short journey twenty kilometres away takes you to villages around Pondicherry, to places like Kizhoor, which held an important place during the independence declaration from the French. This trip to Bahour commune, which now has no trace of its yesteryear fame for Sanskrit studies during the Pallava and Chola dynasties, concludes with a rural cooking and dining experience.

The River Sutra: A two-week monsoon trail covering Muziris, Nila, and Malabar. This experience passes through several districts of Kerala, criss-crossing many rivers, including the Periyar and Kabini. This trail is stitched together from the memories and experiences of those who called many of these rivers their home. It traces how the names of places, lifestyles, farming traditions, and art forms were influenced by the presence of these newly formed land masses that pushed the sea farther away. Music, architecture, food, folklore, traditions, performances, and celebrations are intrinsic parts of this journey. Spend time with farmers, artists, and activists, stay with their families and friends, and listen to magical myths.
