Faith has many names, one one of them is 'GOD'. Arti at Hari-ki-Pauri, Haridwar.

There is something about the raw but endearing vitality that I attribute to the unstructured performance at Haridwar that cannot match the regulated and orchestered arti seen at other places along the Ganges. Maa Ganga as she is revered is a source of sustenance for many people who she blesses as she flows along cutting through the Indian subcontinent. I was introduced to this magnificent spectacle some fifteen years ago and must have seen it over twenty times. Each time I am enveloped by the vibrance and energy of  over a lakh of people collectively offering their prayers to the river goddess.

Timed around sunset and unfailingly held every day of the year, the arti at Har-ki-pauri is held around the many temples built close to the ghats here, each of the temple dedicated to several Hindu gods and goddess. Some of them dedicated solely to "Maa Ganga". Even as the sun goes down, flower boats lit with a an oil lamp float down the Ganges in dedication. The 'arti' song is played on the speakers while the pilgrims join in. The speakers crackle at times but does not lessen the pilgrims zest in joining the singing ). Priests from the various temples stand close to the ghats with towers of oil lit lamps ready to be offered. As the music rises to a tempo, the singing intensifies and the spectacle is multi-sensory - dark skies lit by the flaming towers, the flames are also reflected in the river, the dark water dotted with the flower boats, smell of incense and the sounds of collective singing and the clang of cymbals. The arti in reverence to Maa Ganga never fails to overwhelm you even as you are wrapped in a moment which inspite of the crowds around renders you one with your 'faith', for faith has many names, only one of them is 'GOD'.

Aalia on the Ganges makes arrangements for guests to be escorted to the Arti at Har-ki-Pauri accompanied by a resort staff, who can also arrange for a special Puja in the temples near the Ghats. www.aalia.net
