Set in the village of Rohet on the edge of the Thar Desert, Rohet Garh is a 16th-century fort that has served as the Singh family residence for generations. One of Rajasthan’s pioneering heritage hotels, the property opened its doors to guests in 1989 through the careful restoration and adaptation of its existing fort structures, courtyards, gardens, and lakeside spaces. While retaining the character of a lived-in family home, Rohet Garh offers an authentic introduction to the culture, landscapes, and traditions of rural Marwar. If visiting in March or April, experience the Gangaur festival celebrated by the Rohet family. Idols of Shiva and Parvati from the family temple are displayed each evening, culminating in a traditional wedding ceremony conducted by the temple priest.

The region is home to Bishnoi communities known for their long tradition of protecting wildlife and living in close relationship with the land. At the centre of the village stands Rohet Garh, a 16th-century fort that has served as the Singh family residence for generations. Today, the property welcomes guests while remaining a lived-in family home connected to the surrounding countryside.

Design and Concept

Rohet Garh opened its doors to guests in 1989 when the Singh family began adapting their ancestral home for hospitality. Rather than constructing new buildings, existing structures within the fort complex were carefully restored and reconfigured. Over time, rooms, courtyards, and terraces were adapted while preserving the fort's architectural character. The result is a heritage property that retains the feel of a private residence overlooking gardens and the nearby lake.

Know Your Host

Rohet Garh has been the Singh family home since the mid-17th century. Today, it is run by Sidharth and Rashmi Singh, together with their son Avijit. The family remains closely involved with the surrounding villages and continues to host guests personally, sharing stories of the region’s history and culture. They are also well known for their long association with the Marwari horse and maintain one of the region’s finest stables.

Facilities

During the day, the swimming pool with four charming pavilions invites relaxation or refreshing dips, and in the evening, dinners here are often accompanied by local folk musicians. The spa offers a variety of therapies, from full-body massages to reflexology treatments. The gardens where peacocks dance are also where afternoon teas are served, and the elegant lounge, serene verandahs, and terraces with lake views provide perfect venues for relaxation.

Rohet Garh’s chefs have been trained by the late Thakurani Sahiba Jayendra Kumari, author of Cuisine of Rohet Garh, and prepare her recipes with care. While traditional Rajasthani dishes are the highlight, there's also a wide selection from barbecue to international options. Dining venues include the main poolside restaurant, the garden, and the spectacular lakeview terrace, often accompanied by local folk musicians, which adds to the ambience.

The Village Safari at Rohet Garh offers guests an immersive experience into rural Rajasthan. Visitors can learn about the lives of villagers, including the Bishnois, known as the 'premier ecologists of the world', who have a unique relationship with the black buck antelope. The Equestrian Program showcases the strength and freedom of the Marwari breed of horses, and bird watching during the winter months can reveal up to 200 species in the local lakes and jheels. Guests can also learn to prepare traditional Rajasthani dishes in a culinary workshop led by trained chefs, inspired by the late Thakurani Sahiba Jayendra Kumari's recipes. Additionally, there is a lovely swimming pool for relaxation, and a variety of activities for children, including horseback riding and jeep tours.
