Seven Doors House is a 1932 Portuguese-Goan estate in Pilerne, North Goa, restored rather than reinvented by Deepak and Leenika Jacob after they found it decrepit and abandoned, the surrounding land eroded, in 2020. Eight bedrooms spread across the historic main house and two newer cottages sleep up to sixteen guests, each room carrying its own name, colour and character. Days move easily between the pool, garden and birdwatching decks, with produce-led meals, guided walks and thoughtfully curated experiences bringing guests closer to the landscape and local culture.

Your Stay at 7 Doors House, Goa

The historic Antiga section holds five rooms within the main house, each with its own name, colour and personality:

Quarto do Mar Azul - the master bedroom, and the one guests tend to angle for, with a stained-glass porthole that catches the sunrise and views over both the pool and garden. The ground-floor rooms, Carmesim and Vermelhao, sit closest to the garden and suit anyone who wants an early morning without leaving their balcony, while Amarelo and Verde upstairs carry the same vintage charm with a little more quiet.

For larger groups or added seclusion, the two newer cottages at Nova sit apart from the main house entirely: Suite Presidencial comes with its own plunge pool, bar and jacuzzi, making it ideal for a couple. Quartos Espelhados offers a similar setup across two bedrooms, better suited to friends or a second family.

Between the two sections, the estate holds up to sixteen guests but still feels wonderfully private.

Seven Doors House offers a more intimate way to experience Goa — far from the usual beaches and shacks. Leenika's personal involvement gives the stay its warmth, while the small, attentive team makes the house feel genuinely cared for. It suits a quick escape as easily as it suits a longer, slower stay, with quiet corners, garden-grown meals, and the possibility of special dinners on the terrace.

Design & Concept

The Seven Doors House is a 1932 Portuguese-Goan estate that Deepak and Leenika Jacob discovered in 2020, nearly swallowed by the forest. Rather than reinvent it, they made a vow to restore, working over two years with architects, conservators, and lineage craftsmen from across India to lift the structure, recast only what was necessary, and preserve the character it had gathered over time.

Reclaimed timber, salvaged cast-iron balustrades and handmade Mangalore terracotta tiles run throughout. The reused laterite walls and lime plaster also help keep the house cool. Of the 420 cast-iron railings, 100 were salvaged from an old house and the rest newly cast using traditional methods, allowing old and new to sit seamlessly side by side. And the intriguing name comes from the seven doors along the front verandah, each one standing for a principle behind the restoration: from honouring the human hand and material memory to designing the house to work with light, soil, and the elements.

Facilities

A state-of-the-art gym supports both free-weight and bodyweight training, with a personal trainer available on request. The infinity stone pool runs fifteen metres with a jacuzzi at its edge, and each of the two Nova cottages has its own separate plunge pool and jacuzzi. For evenings indoors, there's an 85-inch TV and a pool table in the entertainment room. Coffee lovers should try the estate's in-house blend, sourced from a family-run plantation in Chikmagalur. Three resident dogs and eight cats live on the property, so the estate is not able to accommodate guests' own pets.

Know Your Host

Deepak and Leenika Jacob found Seven Doors House while looking for a place in Goa that could be both a home and an experiential stay and fell for it almost at once. Their hand shows in nearly every detail, from the art and antiques to the stained-glass windows Leenika developed using colours drawn from the paddy fields outside. They remain closely involved too and are often happy to walk guests through the house, its collection and the stories behind its restoration.

Dining

At 7 Doors House, dining follows the rhythm of the estate, beginning in the permaculture garden and arriving at the table beneath the original sal wood beams of the Sala de Jantar. Guests may walk the garden with the gardener, foraging for herbs, edible flowers and whatever the season offers, from okra and amaranth to lemongrass and fresh greens that inspire the day’s menu. Breakfast is included from 8 am, while lunch and dinner are served à la carte, curated with the Head Chef and shaped by seasonal produce. Bespoke coffee stations add another thoughtful pause to the day, inviting guests to linger over a cup made to their preference. Dietary notes are best shared 24 hours in advance, allowing the kitchen to prepare with quiet care.

Experiences

Mornings are best spent at the Birder’s Deck, with coffee or high tea beneath the raintree as birds gather over Pilerne’s wetland. The formal drawing room is worth taking time to explore, with its antiques and Talpatta and Patachitra paintings. Later pick from the permaculture garden before the chef turns it into lunch. By sunset, the pool deck becomes the ideal spot.

Beyond the estate, a curated set of experiences helps you connect with both the well-known and lesser-known sides of the destination. A dawn walk across the Socorro Plateau brings sightings of hornbills and rare insectivorous plants, while a slower heritage trail through Pilerne takes you past its chapels, old homes and lake. Nearby, you can watch bespoke frames take shape at Cocoleni or see Goa’s history through Subodh Kerkar’s contemporary art at the Museum of Goa. A visit with Kerkar or his daughter makes it even more personal.

You can slow down with an acoustic performance at golden hour, listen to local stories by the fire, or kayak through the Mandovi’s mangroves. Further out, try indigo dyeing, walk through a cacao farm before a tasting, or follow Panjim’s music scene from vinyl bars to jazz haunts.

Old Goa

Worth a half-day at least for its cathedrals alone. Pair it with the Museum of Christian Art at Santa Monica Convent nearby, home to rare Indo-Portuguese ivory and gold-embroidered vestments rarely seen elsewhere.

Socorro Plateau

A rusty-red, largely untouched plateau close to Pilerne, best visited at dawn before the heat sets in. Look out for hornbills and insectivorous plants that most travellers to Goa never get near.
