The Penthouse offers nine spacious suites, each designed for comfort, with generous sleeping areas, antique four-poster beds, and ample desk and sitting space. Natural light fills the rooms, with louvered windows that open fully to city views.

The palette of celadon green, soft yellow, and white complements the furniture, mirrors, and fine fabrics. Glenburn’s signature tea print linen and hand-embroidered cotton sheets subtly recall the location of their flagship property in Darjeeling.

Artworks, old maps and objects across the suites reflect travel and history, giving each room its own quiet narrative. Wooden floors with fine carpets create warmth, while marble-floored dressing rooms and bathrooms create luxurious spaces.

Two of the four Grand Bengal Suites offer direct views of the Victoria Memorial and maidan, one of which has a private balcony as well; and the other two offer city views, larger bathrooms, and a spacious private covered veranda.

The Calcutta Suites offer city views; one of them includes a private balcony. All suites feature large bathrooms with bathtubs, walk-in showers, abundant natural light, and signature Glenburn Therapy Darjeeling Green Tea bath amenities by Forest Essentials.

Destination

With a recorded history dating back to 1690, Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is a city shaped by layers of contrast and continuity.

Declared a Presidency, it became the headquarters of the East India Company in 1773, leading to an extraordinary concentration of colonial architecture and adoption of English culture, including food, festivals, and fashion. The French, Dutch, Danish, Jews, Armenians and Chinese also brought in their trade, food and influences. Alongside this legacy, an unmistakably Indian and Bengali life unfolds through temples, bazaars, neighbourhoods, night clubs and restaurants that pulse with everyday vitality.

Design and Concept

Located just off Park Street, The Glenburn Penthouse rises above the city with sweeping views visible from its lounge and terrace on the 8th floor and infinity pool on the 10th floor. The design draws on a refined sense of elegance, expressed through louvered French doors, antique furniture, art and fabric.

At the heart of the Penthouse is the drawing and dining room, defined by the ‘Hindoostan’ wallpaper that sets the tone for the space, drawing you away from the fervour of the city below. This space flows onto a balcony and the Tea Terrace overlooking the Victoria Memorial, where breakfast and afternoon tea are served when weather is less balmy. For much of the year, a gentle breeze moves through these terraces, making them natural gathering spaces.

The cosmopolitan spirit of the Penthouse reflects the Glenburn ethos, refined over the years at its tea estate in Darjeeling. Each element of the stay is harmonised, allowing guests to settle into the quiet after the frenetic rhythm of the city.

Know Your Host

Husna-Tara Prakash was born and raised in England and spent part of her childhood at a boarding school in India. After completing the International Baccalaureate in Oxford, she spent a year travelling, which led her to Anshuman Prakash, a fourth-generation tea planter. Following studies in Natural Sciences and a postgraduate teaching qualification at the University of Cambridge, she returned to India and joined him on a tea plantation in Kerala.

In 2002, Husna-Tara and designer Bronwyn Latif restored The Burra Bungalow at Glenburn, opening tea estates to visitors in a way never seen before in India. The Tatler Travel Guide soon recognised the property as one of the world’s finest hotels. A decade on, she brought the Glenburn sensibility to Kolkata, using the city as a lens to experience its colonial history and cultural depth through thoughtful walks and day excursions comprising a set of Glenburn Experiences. The Glenburn Penthouse was created to be an elegant base from which to uncover the often-forgotten magic of this city.

Dining

Dining at the Glenburn Penthouse reflects the commitment to fresh local ingredients and food stories originating in Bengal. Chef Shaun Kenworthy leads this with his delicious stories that blend of colonial, Bengali, Anglo-Indian, and Kolkata street-food influences, brought together with a contemporary sensibility. Under his leadership, the Glenburn Penthouse restaurant has been featured on Conde Nast Travellers’ Top 50 Restaurants in India in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Glenburn Café provides another space for casual dining.

Afternoon Tea is served daily and included in the overnight package - offers views over the city, endless pours of Glenburn's very own Darjeeling and Assam single-estate tea, finger sandwiches, scones, savoury delights and can be accompanied by a glass of bubbly!

Shaun’s seasonal Tasting Menu is an eight-course menu rooted in Bengal, celebrating local stories and ingredients.

The fine dining and casual dining in the restaurant also includes an A La Carte Menu, a Bengali Thali experience and anything the kitchen is able to conjure up for you on request!
