Located beyond Jaipur, beneath the hills surrounding Amber Fort, Dera Amer Wilderness Camp occupies 180 acres of regenerated scrub forest, interspersed with farmland and rural settlements. The camp shelters camels, dogs, and its stars, the rehabilitated elephants. Jackals and leopards are occasionally seen in the surrounding wilderness. This sanctuary is a great alternative to the city while keeping the city’s historic monuments within easy reach.

Design and Concept

Concerned about large-scale resort development around Amer, Udaijit Singh and his family purchased degraded land with a view to restoring native vegetation and limiting construction. Only a small section is used for the farm and camp, while the rest has been left to regenerate naturally. The result is a private nature reserve where animals roam undisturbed. With just six tents, the camp focuses on low-impact hospitality and nature-based experiences rather than conventional safari tourism.

Know Your Host

Udaijit Singh established Dera Amer with a strong conservation focus, particularly around the rescue and rehabilitation of working elephants from the Amer area. Working closely with mahouts, he created an environment where rescued elephants could live with greater freedom while continuing their traditional bond with handlers. The camp also supports nearby villages through employment and educational initiatives.

Facilities

A central pavilion with bar and lounge provides the perfect spot to while away afternoons. The swimming pool nestles between tent locations and overlooks the surrounding scrubland. As dusk falls, Sundown Point beckons, and alfresco dining locations are lit by lanterns. Naturalists lead nature walks through the 160-acre rewilded forest, home to 150+ bird species. The main draw remains interactions with rescued elephants, camels and resident dogs, under the supervision of their caretakers.

Dining

The food is informal and largely home-styled, often prepared with produce from the camp’s organic farm. Meals are served alfresco - under shady trees by day, beneath stars enhanced by lantern and bonfire light at night. Local musicians add atmosphere whilst barbecued meats and paneer are served fresh off the grill. Breakfast may be taken outdoors while the elephants are brought their morning feed of bananas and sugarcane nearby.

Rural Village Jeep Safaris

A tour of the landscape in a private 4×4 jeep lends an opportunity to observe the wilderness, hamlets, and the village school. You can also head cross-country for an off-road adventure to the magnificent Amer Fort.

Horse and Camel Safaris

A horse safari can be arranged for experienced riders and requires at least 24 hours’ notice. Camel safaris are also possible, but only with the resident camels, Sonu and Raja. The safari is confined to the local area, giving you a flavour of rural life in Rajasthan.

Elephant Walk

Accompanied by mahouts, guests may join a gentle walk through the surrounding forest with one of the rescued elephants, observing their natural behaviour and daily routines.
