The place itself is an enduring myth - Ramathra translates as a place where Rama, a revered Indian mythological hero is said to have stayed on his journey south to Srilanka.

Within the fort is a restored palace with several levels, 2 luxury suites, and 5 deluxe rooms featuring elegant seating, elegant linens is colours that calm, and handwoven rugs. The suites have private terraces with grand views of the lake and the countryside, while the deluxe rooms surround an open courtyard. Six beautifully designed spacious luxury tents, set against rampart walls feature ensuite bathrooms, high ceilings, modern teak furniture and comfortable beds. Join Ravi Raj Pal and his wife Gitanjali, the fort owners and host who made it their mission to revive Ramathra as a heritage stay in the countryside . Having grown up in the region, Ravi knows the terrain intimately and is skilled at spotting nocturnal wildlife while sharing stories about the landscape, historical trivia and stories of local communities. Their son Udit, a talented photographer and naturalist joins them especially on the night safaris and bird walks.

Destination

A historic fort strategically built at the head of a valley to collect taxes, Ramathra sits halfway between Jaipur and Agra and less than two hours drive from Ranthambore. This location is paying dividends once more, offering guests spectacular views of the valley below, the perennial lake and the expansive countryside with stunning night skies. Even before opening, the landscape has been rewilded, creating an unexpected birding and wildlife destination where nilgai, wild boar, wolves, hyenas and foxes roam freely. This rural gem reveals villages and farming communities living pastoral lives farming and managing livestock. Behold night skies that remain gloriously free from light pollution.

Design & Concept

What distinguishes this 350-year-old fort from many heritage homes is its rural seclusion and connection to nature. Crafted to showcase this, six luxury tents maintain a low footprint whilst rooms occupy the original multi-story palace, which local craftspeople have carefully restored. The rampart walls allow bird's-eye views over farmlands and rewilded forests where blue bulls, deer, and occasional panthers roam. The Fort showcases a side of rural Rajasthan rarely seen from such comfort and style. The Palace portion has suites and rooms that have been restored with restraint and elegance, so that a careful sense to preserve show up as ruins lit to show atmosphere and at others preserve space and hence exclusivity.

Hosts

Ramathra Fort is home to owners and hosts, Gitanjali and Ravi Raj Pal. Ravi is a treasure trove of information on local history, trails and hikes around and the wilderness around. Gitanjali is the curator of the Ramathra experience, keeping track of guest interests and requests while training teams for service and hospitality. The kitchen in the fort serves up family recipes with local produce from the farms nearby. Ramathra exudes a sense of relaxed hospitality and welcoming atmosphere.

Facilities

The dining room, lounge, and bar lead through arched doorways to a charming courtyard garden with comfortable outdoor seating areas. Dining venues include the main dining hall between the tents and the palace portion, which alfresco dining options include outdoor dining in the lawns, terrace and the ramparts. Staff-led guided walks take visitors through ancient temples, across dried riverbeds, and through small villages. At the same time, boats on Lake Kalisil and jeeps exploring further afield offer different perspectives of the landscape. One of the most special experiences of a stay in Ramathra is the sunset safaris along the lake and night safaris in the wilderness areas around the fort. Up on the ramparts, day beds allow for daytime lounging and stargazing in the evening. The often photographer jacuzzi in one of the turrets provides the perfect spot for watching stunning sunsets with a drink next to you. A local version of a spa is offered for those tired from their travels, sitting out in the winter sun or on the sun deck, a foot massage by hands trained only through experience feels more than welcome.

Dining

Ramathra's menus favour regional and local farm fresh produce with traditional Rajasthani recipes, celebrating authentic flavours and cooking methods. Meals are served in the dining room, garden or courtyard depending on the weather. Breakfast provides a relaxed start to the day, while evenings often begin with drinks around the fire during the cooler months. Outdoor dining in the garden is a regular feature, particularly in winter when clear skies and cooler temperatures make evenings comfortable. Private dining on request is possible on the ramparts and the terrace in prior request.

Experience

The vast Daang plateau, stretching east to the Chambal River valley and as far south as Ranthambhore, offers many hikes with its secluded gorges and hidden shrines. It is home to a variety of deer, blue bulls, wolves, jackals, hyenas, wild boar, sloth bears, and panthers. Easy walks to the villages is an opportunity to see village life, and rides on hand-paddled boats on the perennial lake Kalisil for birding followed by picnic lunches or tea is often quoted as the top experience.
