A peaceful immersion into Ladakhi culture
Nimmu House

Nimmoo is a village in Ladakh, notable for its beautiful scenery of fast-flowing rivers and golden mountains. It's a good starting point for treks in the Himalayas due to its lower altitude of 3100 meters. Within the Nimmoo village is the Nimmu House, an eco-resort nestled at 10,000 feet. It's about 45 minutes from Leh, the capital of Ladakh, accessible by taxi. The house includes stables with various animals and an orchard with apricot, apple, and walnut trees. The presence of two Buddhist temples on the site adds a unique spiritual dimension. It's ideal for travellers looking to relax or explore the cultural and natural attractions of the region.

Perfectly Rare

Nimmu House is a unique retreat with an authentic Ladakhi experience with its historic setting, eco-friendly practices, and a variety of cultural and adventure activities in the heart of the Himalayas.

Nimmu House, originally constructed by Zildar Rinchen Namgyal from the Nangso family of Ladakh, reflects traditional Ladakhi architectural principles. These include exterior walls that are designed to angle outwards, a feature inspired by buildings the nobleman encountered during a pilgrimage to Lhasa. This structure stands as a significant piece of the region's cultural heritage.

Eight decades after its initial construction, Nimmu House underwent extensive renovations to repurpose it as a sustainable tourism venture. This project was executed by a diverse team including Tibetologists, art historians, restoration specialists, local designers, and hospitality professionals. The extensive nature of the renovations, combined with limited access to manpower and the challenges posed by severe winters, necessitated spreading the work over several years.

The house today serves not only as a notable landmark in the area but also as a model for heritage preservation. All materials used in the renovation were sourced locally, and the interior decor was meticulously planned to honour Ladakhi traditions.

Nimmu House features seven Ladakhi tents scattered throughout the orchard and five rooms, all designed by French designer Emeline Leveille-Nizerolle using traditional and local materials.

Heritage Rooms: Located on the first floor, the heritage rooms overlook the orchard. Each room features a king-size bed and a private ensuite bathroom equipped with solar-heated hot water. The rooms also include electricity and fans. Extra beds are available on request.

Deluxe Tent: The double deluxe tents are placed throughout the orchard. Each tent is built with wooden floors and stone walls. They feature a king-size bed and a private ensuite bathroom with solar-heated hot water, along with electricity and fans. At the entrance of each tent, there is a patio that offers views of the Himalayan mountains. Extra beds can be added on request.

Dining

At Nimmu House, dining is a key part of the experience. Ingredients are sourced directly from the property's own orchard and garden, as well as from local farms and cattle.

Breakfast at Nimmu House features a variety of options, including fresh fruit juices and fruit salads made from orchard-grown produce. Guests can also enjoy traditional Ladakhi bread paired with homemade jams and butter. For those looking for something more filling, there is a choice of eggs or pancakes.

For lunch and dinner, Nimmu House presents fixed three-course menus that include a range of culinary styles. Dishes range from local Ladakhi favourites like momos, chowmein, and thukpa, to broader Asian, Indian, Mediterranean, and French specialties. Vegetarian options are also readily available to cater to different dietary preferences.

Start your day with yoga and meditation classes held daily at the Yoga Shala on the second floor, where expert teachers help you reconnect your mind and body. For a taste of local culture, take a guided village tour along the river in the traditional village of Nimmu, ending with a traditional butter tea in a Ladakhi house. Dive into adventure by trekking along Himalayan paths, enjoying the vast landscapes, or try rafting to experience the stunning mountain views from the water. For those interested in local crafts and cuisine, participate in a cooking atelier to learn how to make Momos from an in-house chef, or join a pottery session with a local potter and bring home your own artwork. Additionally, experience the rejuvenating Tibetan massage for holistic healing.

Visit the Monasteries: Located relatively close to Nimmu, Likir Monastery is one of the older and well-maintained monastic sites in Ladakh. It hosts a large statue of Buddha and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Alchi Monastery known for its intricate wood carvings and ancient wall paintings is situated on flat ground rather than on a hilltop.

Explore the Indus and Zanskar Rivers: This striking natural sight, where the two rivers meet, showcases distinct colours merging and is a popular spot for photography. It’s also a starting point for thrilling river rafting adventures.

Trek to Hemis National Park: Ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and trekkers, this national park is home to the rare snow leopard. It's a great place for hiking and offers opportunities to see diverse wildlife in a relatively untouched natural environment.

RARE Tip
