Sanctuary Resort offers 27 rooms in two categories: 19 Deluxe Rooms and 8 Villas. The Deluxe Rooms include twin beds, ensuite bathrooms and private outdoor areas overlooking the grounds and surrounding forest. One of these rooms functions as a junior suite.

The Villas are standalone cottages with verandas, king-sized beds and spacious bathrooms. These freestanding structures provide greater privacy and can accommodate extra beds for families. A distinctive feature of the rooms is the traditional Tharu mud-plaster wall finish, made from regional soil and applied by hand with techniques now practised by only a small number of Tharu artisans.

Take an early morning canoe ride along the Narayani River. The quiet waterways offer one of the best chances to observe birdlife and wildlife along the riverbanks before the day’s safaris begin.

Destination

Located in the Inner Terai lowlands, Chitwan National Park became Nepal's first national park in 1973 and a World Heritage Site in 1983. This 932-square-kilometre subtropical forest is home to over 700 wildlife species, including one-horned rhino, Bengal tiger, leopard, and sloth bear, as well as over 500 bird species, making it Nepal's premier birdwatching destination.

Sanctuary Resort sits in the quieter Amaltari region along the Narayani River, away from busy tourist areas and just one hour from Bharatpur Airport.

Design and Concept

Sanctuary Resort was designed with inspiration drawn from the architectural traditions of the Tharu communities who have lived in this region for generations. The buildings are low-rise and arranged around shared courtyards, echoing the layout of traditional Tharu family compounds. Locally sourced materials and traditional construction techniques were used throughout the property.

Natural colours and textures create interiors that reflect the surrounding landscape while maintaining a strong connection to local craftsmanship and building traditions.

Owned by Mr Binod Shrestha and managed by Arun Kumar Jha, Sanctuary Resort is run by a team deeply committed to ethical wildlife tourism and community integration. Expert naturalists with excellent park knowledge lead safaris, while the resort team ensures attentive service. The safari guides' wildlife expertise creates unforgettable encounters; the resort aims to be as much a sanctuary for guests as the national park is for its endangered species.

Facilities

The infinity swimming pool with loungers is a great place to relax between safaris. The private beach area along the Narayani River offers stunning sunset views, and the full-service bar serves both international and local drinks.

Viewing towers inside the jungle overlook wetlands, grasslands and dense forest, brilliant for spotting birds across different habitats. Bikes are available for exploring the surrounding Tharu villages, with car hire and airport shuttle services on hand.

Dining

The buffet provides American, Chinese, Indian, Italian, and, of course, Nepalese cuisine. Evening sundowners see drinks and snacks served against the backdrop of the sunset over the Narayani River, and the alfresco BBQ dinners are a great way to spend an evening.

Nature Walk: One of the best ways to explore any destination, especially jungles, is on foot, getting up close and personal with all that nature has to offer. It is a perfect way to get to know the flora as well as the smaller creatures of the forest.

Expert naturalists lead jeep safaris and early morning walking safaris through Chitwan National Park. Spot one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears and mugger crocodiles. The western Amaltari location means fewer tourists and more authentic wilderness experiences.

Canoe Rides & Birdwatching

Traditional hand-rowed wooden canoes glide slowly along the Narayani River, allowing one to spot birds, monkeys, rhinos and crocodiles. Over 500 bird species have been recorded in Chitwan, more than any other protected area in Nepal.
