Walk the forest and orchard trails of Sitla with Vikram Maira, the owner and long-time custodian of the estate, who has lived on and conserved this land for over three decades. His routes pass through privately preserved forest and orchards, often opening onto wide Himalayan views. Mukteshwar is also rich in birdlife, so carry binoculars and allow time to observe slowly.

The Kumaon Himalayas reveal themselves through pine forests, terraced fields, and villages resting along ridgelines. Life follows seasonal rhythms shaped by light, land, and weather. Mukteshwar sits at about 7,000 feet, where forests meet orchards, and the air carries the scent of woodsmoke and wild herbs. Within this landscape, Sitla Estate spans 40 acres of forest and fruit orchards. At its centre stands a restored stone bungalow dating back over a century, its presence shaped by time, landscape, and quiet continuity. Here, the Himalaya is not a spectacle but a lived environment — experienced through stillness, walks, and observation.

Design

The estate blends colonial-era Kumaoni architecture with later additions built in local style. Stone walls, timber beams, and deep verandas anchor the original bungalow, while interiors retain heritage furniture, textured surfaces, and handcrafted details. Design remains restrained, allowing material, light, and landscape to define atmosphere rather than ornament.

Know Your Host

Vikram Maira, an avid trekker, has called the Kumaon hills home for over three decades. Formerly from the advertising and television world, he has played a key role in conserving more than 40 acres of forests and orchards around Sitla, which are among the largest privately preserved tracts in the region. A passionate explorer, Vikram also leads trekking expeditions across the Himalayas. In its newly refurbished avatar, Sitla reflects another of his passions, emerging as a destination for thoughtful, well-crafted food.

Dining

Food at Sitla follows the rhythm of the estate rather than the conventions of the restaurant. Much of the produce comes from the orchard, kitchen garden, and nearby farms. Breakfast combines Indian and Western staples alongside fresh fruit, homemade breads, jams, and preserves. Afternoon tea often includes baked goods made from estate fruit. Lunch and dinner draw from Kumaoni cooking as well as simple continental and Indian preparations, with meals prepared from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Dining is unhurried and often communal, reflecting homestead tradition rather than formal service.

Days at Sitla follow light and weather rather than schedule. Forest trails cross the estate’s orchards and wooded slopes, where birdlife is abundant and wildlife occasionally visible.
