Your Stay at The Bhuj House, Gujarat
The rooms here are named, not numbered - and that tells you a great deal about the place. They reflect the long history and culture of Gujarat and are an intimate retreat. Rohee’s can be set up as a twin or king-sized double and carries the memory of one of the last family members to live in Bhuj. Jafri takes its name from the traditional wooden lattice screen - the jafri - that was built to compensate for the room's original small windows; it was, for several decades, the outdoor toilet block.
The family converted it, enclosed a section of courtyard behind the lattice, and made it into one of the more appealing rooms in the house. Medi - Kutchi for - attic - is the only upstairs room, reached by a spiral staircase, with interconnecting spaces sleeping up to four; the sloping ceiling in the bathroom is worth noting if you're tall. And Bapaiji's opens to the verandah and courtyard and was once the room of the family grandmother, with original rosewood beds draped in soft canopy. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, AC and WiFi.

Do not treat The Bhuj House only as a convenient base for the White Rann. Give Bhuj itself time. Spend a slow morning at Hamisar Lake and the palace complex; wander Shroff Bazaar without rushing; return to the courtyard for tea; and then step out again in the evening when the town softens. The house is at its best when you allow the contrast to work on you - the noise outside, the shade inside, the desert beyond, and the sense that Kutch is not one destination but a series of thresholds.

Bhuj is the historic heartbeat of Kutch, a vibrant desert town that has captivated travelers for centuries with its bustling textile bazaars, ancient palaces, and deep craft traditions. It serves as the ultimate cultural crossroads of the region, where every narrow lane seems to tell a story of old trade routes and resilient communities.
To find its quiet side, you have to head just beyond the old walled city into the historic "Camp" area. Here, tucked away on a lively side street, sits The Bhuj House. Built in 1894 by Pestonji Sorabji Bhujwala, this traditional courtyard bungalow is a beautiful, living relic of the town’s multicultural heritage. While much of the city has modernized around it, this ancestral home has been lovingly preserved and restored by the same family for over a century, offering a rare look into the historic Parsi community that settled in Kutch during the 19th century.
Getting here is very convenient, as Bhuj houses its own domestic airport with direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi, while a road trip from Ahmedabad takes about six hours through the changing, scenic landscape of the peninsula. While the town is the perfect base for exploring the wider wonders of Kutch - from the sweeping salt plains to the coastal Mandvi - The Bhuj House encourages you to slow down right where you are. Design & Concept
The layout of The Bhuj House is defined by the traditional architecture of a late 19th-century Parsi bungalow, which values inward-looking serenity and cool interiors over grand, imposing facades. Everything here revolves around a beautiful, open-air central courtyard, shaded by a mature neem tree and complete with a traditional wooden swing and a historic family well. After the house was severely damaged in the 2001 earthquake, Jehan Bhujwala and his wife Katie meticulously restored it to preserve its original character and homely charm while adding in modern comforts. Inside, the interiors function as a quiet chronicle of family history, styled with an understated mix of antique rosewood furniture and vintage photographs.

Jehan and Katie Bhujwala bring a deep, multi-generational connection to the region that completely shapes the rhythm of your stay. They lovingly run the house, often splitting their time between Kanha and Kutch. Jehan, a descendant of the home’s original 19th-century founder, is an invaluable repository of local lore, while Katie’s keen eye for regional design keeps the space feeling vibrant and relevant. The daily meals are a celebration of Parsi-Kutchi heritage, pairing traditional Parsi flavors with fresh, locally sourced Kutchi ingredients. Everything centers around the open-air courtyard pantry, where you pass dishes and swap stories around a long shared table. Breakfast here under the neem tree with the soft hum of the town just beyond the walls is easily the best argument for staying.

Darbargadh Palace Complex & Hamisar Lake
Start with old Bhuj. The Darbargadh complex includes Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal, both deeply affected by the 2001 earthquake but still central to the city’s historic imagination. Hamisar Lake, built to catch the flow of three rivers, remains one of Bhuj’s most evocative public spaces and attracts flamingos and pelicans when conditions are right
Shroff Bazaar
The market that starts at the foot of the palace complex and works its way through a web of narrow streets. Vintage embroidered textiles, silver, antiques, chai rooms, Saifee's ice cream parlor, and the original Khavda sweet house are still making their Mesur sweet meat. Worth half a day!
Bhujia Hill and Fort
Named for the serpent god Bhujang. The fort is partially ruined and partly wilderness now, but the climb up to trail the old wall and look out over Bhuj is worth the effort.
Do Not Miss
Just down the road from The Bhuj House is the Parsi Agiary, built by the same Bhujwala family and inaugurated in 1905. It is Kutch’s only Parsi place of worship and one of the few remaining traces of Bhuj’s once-thriving Parsi community. Just seeing it from the outside gives a deeper sense of memory and place.
