Located at 11,562 feet above sea level in Leh’s old town, The Grand Dragon is designed in traditional Ladakhi style and remains one of the region’s earliest established hotels. What began in 1974 as the three-room Dragon Hotel near Leh Bazaar evolved into The Grand Dragon in 2007.

Today, it is one of the few large inventory hotels in Leh that operate year-round. The property offers conference facilities, multiple dining venues, outdoor dining spaces, and a programme of cultural activities, making it suitable for both leisure and structured group travel.

The Grand Dragon offers 76 rooms across four primary categories, combining Ladakhi design elements with contemporary comfort suited to high-altitude conditions. The 36 Deluxe and Twin Rooms are the hotel’s entry category, defined by large picture windows and practical layouts. They are designed for short and mid-length stays, offering heating, modern en-suite bathrooms, and comfortable work and seating areas.

The 28 Premier Heritage Rooms overlook the hotel’s gardens and incorporate more pronounced Ladakhi detailing in textiles and interior finishes. These rooms offer a quieter setting within the property and are often preferred for longer stays. Six Family Suites provide additional space, with separate living areas that allow flexibility for small groups or families. Garden-facing orientation offers privacy and reduced exposure to the street.

The Luxury Suites represent the highest category within the hotel. These include a primary bedroom and a separate living room, with teak ceilings and elevated interior detailing. Set in Ladakh’s high-altitude desert, Leh remains one of the Himalaya’s most distinctive cultural landscapes. Sitting over 11,000 feet above sea level, the town is framed by snow-clad peaks, high passes, and ancient monasteries. Turquoise rivers, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri lakes, and vast cold-desert terrain define the region’s geography. Once a key stop on historic Indo–Central Asian trade routes, Leh continues to reflect Indo-Tibetan traditions. Monasteries such as Hemis, Thiksey, and Shey remain active centres of worship, while the 17th-century Leh Palace overlooks the old town and Indus Valley. The hotel reflects Ladakhi architectural elements through carved wooden cornices, painted ceilings, textile-inspired detailing, and regional motifs. Handmade artworks by one of Ladakh’s early modern artists are displayed throughout the property. Know Your Host

The hotel is run by Danish and his siblings, the third generation of the Abdu family in Leh. What began in 1974 as a modest three-room property at Dragon Hotel near Leh Bazar grew into The Grand Dragon in 2007. Educated in hotel management in Switzerland, Danish remains closely involved in operations and guest engagement. Under his stewardship, the hotel has expanded its facilities while retaining family ownership and strong local employment.

The Grand Dragon offers multiple dining venues serving global favourites alongside Ladakhi, Tibetan, and Chinese cuisine. Solja operates as the in-house bakery. Tusrabs specialises in Tibetan, Ladakhi, and Chinese dishes. Zasgyath functions as the coffee shop with seasonally changing international menus. The hotel’s thukpa is widely regarded as one of the most popular in Leh. Outdoor dining is available during the warmer months.
