Cycling

Destination

The grounds of Windermere River House extend to the banks of the Periyar River, with evergreen forests and rubber plantations framing the property on either side. Located just off the Kochi–Munnar highway, Neriamangalam is known for South India’s first arch bridge, built by the Maharaja of Travancore and opened in 1935. Spanning the Periyar, it marks the gateway to the Idukki hills and continues to serve as a vital crossing for the surrounding communities. The river defines the pace of life here, offering both gentle riverside excursions and long, unbroken moments of stillness. River House also provides access to villages in the Idukki district and the nearby Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India.

Design and Concept

Windermere River House began as a family retreat, conceived as a place to spend quiet weekends close to Kochi and the natural landscapes of the lower Western Ghats. Over time, it evolved into an intimate five-bedroom villa-style hotel set within two acres of coconut palms, rubber trees, and tropical planting. The atmosphere remains that of a private home, with highly personalised service shaped by a long-standing local team. Designed in the style of a colonial plantation residence, the house draws from traditional Kerala architecture. Interiors are open and airy, furnished with handcrafted pieces in local teak and rosewood. The living room, with its small library and board games, invites long, unstructured hours indoors. Outdoors, the swimming pool overlooks the river, offering a serene vantage point throughout the day. The house sits at the highest point of the property, with gardens sloping down to the pool and dining pavilion by the water. On clear nights, the skies turn deep and star-filled, adding to the sense of quiet seclusion.

Know Your Host

Windermere River House was conceptualised by Dr Simon John and is now run by John and a team that has worked closely with the family over the years. As a natural extension of Windermere Estate in Munnar, the River House was envisioned as part of a dual experience, pairing plantation living in the hills with a slower, river-led retreat below. Together, the two properties offer guests a deeper understanding of Kerala’s varied landscapes.

Experiences

Days unfold naturally at River House. Sunbathing, reading, and afternoon rests are accompanied by birdsong, shifting light through the trees, and the river's steady movement. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day. A dedicated open-air yoga and meditation space faces the infinity pool and the Periyar, with daily sessions offered. Yoga mats are placed in each room to encourage quiet moments of practice by the water. With the nearest town nearly twenty kilometres away, the sense of isolation is complete. The stillness here has long attracted writers, thinkers, and retreat groups seeking uninterrupted time and space. The surrounding region is a haven for birdlife. It was Salim Ali's work in the 1930s that brought attention to this area as one of the finest bird habitats in the Western Ghats. Established in 1982, the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary continues to protect over three hundred species. Guided birding excursions offer opportunities to spot endemic species such as the Malabar hornbill and Peninsular bay owl. At the same time, the property itself hosts grey hornbills, sunbirds, night herons, barbets, bee-eaters, and mynahs.
