Sustainability Story of The Belgadia Palace
The Belgadia Palace is one of the richest Pinwheel stories in the RARE collection, because it understands that a palace can be more than an inheritance. It can become a platform for ecology, livelihoods, arts, health, education, and cultural renewal.
Energy-efficient lighting and appliances are in place, while low-flush toilets and sustainable sanitation and water management practices support resource responsibility. Waste is addressed through a strong low-waste model: single-use plastic is banned, glass water bottles are used, haircare and skincare come in refillable dispensers, waste is segregated, compost pits are maintained, and recycled or upcycled furniture and sustainable construction materials are used.
The Mayurbhanj Foundation works across education, livelihood, health, sports, and the arts, while the hotel creates employment and training for local youth. Local youth are hired and skilled, and the Foundation supports self-help groups, handloom communities, artists, vulnerable groups, and local cultural practitioners.
Heritage conservation is central to the palace’s identity. It promotes local festivals, Dokra craft, Chhau dance, pattachitra, folk music, handicraft villages, and community-led cultural engagement. Here, culture is not a decorative evening programme. It is a living economy and a collective memory.
Biodiversity is supported through organic nutrition farming, integrated pest and nutrition management, edible landscaping, indigenous plant restoration, invasive species removal, bamboo plantations, fruit trees, and zero-budget natural farming techniques.
The palace maintains a low room-to-land ratio across seven acres. Cyclone debris has been composted or repurposed into furniture and boundary walls, and the property is moving towards a replicable farm-to-table model.
Through Project Chhauni, Chuliaposi Handloom School, Mayurbhanj Art Foundation, Sabai Grass self-help groups, Leper Colony, and Dokra villages, the Foundation connects communities directly to tourism, with profits flowing back to them.
The Belgadia Palace offers perhaps the most compelling argument for conscious luxury: that beauty is most powerful when it becomes useful.
