Set along the banks of the Diphlu River on the edge of Kaziranga National Park, Diphlu River Lodge is a conservation-focussed retreat rooted in the terai landscapes of eastern Himalayas, including building and craft traditions of Assam. Established by Ashish and Jahnabi Phookan, the lodge draws inspiration from the architecture of indigenous Mishing community, with stilted bamboo-and-thatch cottages designed to respond to the rhythms of the Brahmaputra floodplains. Built using natural materials and adorned with local crafts that is a part of all the guest areas, the lodge maintains a close relationship with its surroundings, allowing guests to remain connected to the river, grasslands, and wildlife-rich wilderness beyond. Your Stay at Diphlu River Lodge, Kaziranga, Assam

Twelve cottages, set on stilts and designed with natural, sustainable materials, are close to the river and forests with hearty views of the Diphlu river or the paddy fields. Each cottage features an ensuite bathroom, a dressing area, and a wide glass door that opens to a private veranda, creating a seamless flow between indoor comfort and the natural landscape. Cottages are raised on cement stilts and made of bamboo and wood, topped with thatched roofs to blend seamlessly with its the wilderness around.

Special care has been taken to use local crafts and textiles to embellish the interiors which is integral to the design aesthetics of the hospitality company that also runs the Brahmaputra river cruises under Assam Bengal Navigation. Every cottage is large with high ceilings and windows that bring in the light, and wide folding glass doors that open onto a veranda where comfortable sating in cushioned cane chairs give you a ring side view to the wildlife around.

Destination

Bordered on the north by the Brahmaputra River and the Karbi Anglong hills on the south, Kaziranga unfolds as a landscape shaped by water, floodplains, tall elephant grass, and terai forests of the Eastern Himalayan arc. The famed one-horned rhinoceros roams here alongside elephants, wild buffalo, swamp deer and big cats, while wetlands support an extraordinary range of resident and migratory birdlife. Horizons feel open, the air carries the scent of river and grass, and the ecosystem remains one of India’s most intact wilderness environments.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kaziranga National Park is best known for its population of the one-horned rhino and its conservation history. Today Kaziranga National Park covering over 884 sq. km of large wetlands, dense forest, and elephant grass supports over 2700 rhinos which is roughly 70% of the world population. This historic conservation success story is the result of advanced surveillance, anti-poaching measures, habitat management and community engagement resulting in intense recovery and a conservation status shift on the IUCN list.

Design & Concept

Diphlu River Lodge is conceived as an extension of the landscape rather than a retreat imposed upon it. Established in 2008 by Ashish Phookan and Jahnabi Phookan, the lodge draws directly on traditional Mishing tribal architecture. Elevated thatch-and-bamboo cottages rest lightly on stilts — a response both to regional design heritage and to the flood-prone ecology of the Brahmaputra valley. Natural materials such as bamboo, wood, and thatch define the built form, while local weaves and handcrafted artefacts bring the rich craft traditions of Assam into the interiors.

Wide glass doors open onto private verandas furnished with cane seating, encouraging constant visual and sensory connection to river, fields, and forest. The architecture remains unfenced, allowing wildlife corridors to flow uninterrupted between the lodge and the national park. Rather than theatrical luxury, the design prioritises ecological sensitivity, vernacular craft, and a sense of lived-in warmth shaped by place.

Know Your Host

Diphlu River Lodge is a revival of Ashish Phookan’s father’s pioneering ecotourism venture from the 1970s, the Kamrup Komplex. Rooted in that early conservation focussed vision, the lodge continues to balance hospitality, environmental awareness, and community engagement. Today Ashish and Jahnabi with their daughter Antara who handles communication and marketing for the lodge and ABN are established pioneers of the idea that tourism is a force for good. Much of these pioneering initiatives surely is has contributed to Assam being highlighted by The New York Times in 2025 on the 4th spot in its esteemed listing of “52 Places to Go in 2025,

Facilities

Each air-conditioned cottage includes a comfortable large bed, a seating area, a writing desk, a minibar, a DIY beverage station for tea and coffee. Bathrooms offer spacious dressing areas and wardrobes with in-built safes, creating a stay defined by ease and thoughtful detail.
