The camp traces its origins to the grand hunting expeditions of a bygone era, when expeditions would journey deep into the wilderness and establish temporary settlements. While hunting is now a thing of the past, the spirit of those luxurious caravans endures.

The camp’s conservation-led philosophy draws inspiration from the Bishnoi community, whose deep-rooted faith calls for the protection of all living beings. Even the name ‘Manvār’ reflects this ethos. In Rajasthani culture, it signifies the gracious and respectful welcome of guests, mirroring the Bishnoi tradition of harmonious coexistence with nature and all forms of life.

MANVĀR Kumat, Thar Serenity Camp offers 11 spacious tents set amid a private 100-acre estate of native scrubland. The tents are generously sized, equipped with full-sized beds with comfortable mattresses, bedside tables, desks, chairs, and ample storage for luggage. The interiors are elegant and understated, in hues and prints that are both earthy and contemporary. Each tent includes an en-suite bathroom with solar-heated hot water available 24/7 and a private outdoor sit-out to relax and soak in uninterrupted views of the landscape and sky.

The camp lies near Khiyansariya village in the Shergarh region, an area known for its strong community history and close relationship with land and wildlife. Many homes here have sent soldiers into service, reflecting a legacy of resilience and solidarity. The landscape is spare yet alive — shaped by wind, native vegetation, and long intervals between rain. Removed from noise and artificial light, the desert reveals itself through stillness, distance, and sky.

Design and Concept

MANVĀR Kumat Thar Serenity Camp was conceived as a retreat that embraces the vastness and quietude of the Thar Desert rather than attempting to tame it. Set within a private desert estate between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, the camp draws inspiration from Rajasthan’s vernacular architecture, shaped by generations of living with heat, wind, and water scarcity. Spacious tented suites are carefully positioned for privacy and uninterrupted desert views, while shaded patios and open gathering spaces create comfort within an ever-changing landscape. Materials, textures, and craftsmanship reflect the region’s rural character, grounding the experience in local identity rather than imported luxury. A low-density footprint and sensitive planning allow the camp to coexist with its fragile surroundings, where every resource is precious. Rather than relying on spectacle, MANVĀR Kumat celebrates stillness, space, and a deep connection to the desert. Luxury here is defined by solitude, authenticity, and the rare privilege of experiencing the Thar on its own terms.

Founded in 1995 by Moti Singh Rathore, MANVĀR was created to present an authentic experience of desert life. This initiative supports surrounding villages through livelihoods linked to hospitality, guiding, and local engagement. Moti Singh continues to work with local villages to protect traditional customs and to support community development projects, education, etc.

Dining

Meals reflect both place and season. The kitchen focuses on Rajasthani cuisine, alongside a selection of familiar dishes, with menus adjusted to guests' preferences. Evenings are often held outdoors, where lantern light and open sky create a natural setting for dinner. Traditional music and dance from local communities may accompany the experience. A short walk from the tents leads to a separate bar pavilion, where guests may gather before dinner beneath the night sky.

MANVĀR offers an introduction to desert life shaped by culture, ecology, and landscape. Guided village walks reveal the region's daily rhythms and long-held traditions. Desert safaris cross dunes and scrub, where chinkara gazelles, desert fox, and reptiles inhabit the terrain. Camel rides led by local herders provide a slower way to experience the Thar. Safaris may also include visits to Orans, sacred groves protected by community belief, reflecting a tradition of conservation rooted in necessity and respect. During winter, the wider region attracts migratory birds, like the Demoiselle cranes. Between excursions, the heated infinity pool offers rest.
