Set at the foothills of the Zabarwan, a few kilometres from the famed Mughal garden, Nadis draws you in the moment you pass through the tall iron gates and onto the cobbled pathway. The property unfolds in two halves; one given to the thoughtfully designed structure, the other, a garden that is vivid with colour in spring and summer, and full of surprises for the rest of the year. The hotel is built chalet-style on the foundation of what was once a family home.

The porch, draped with iridescent vine, leads into a generous lounge warmed by underfloor heating. A floor-to-ceiling window floods the room with light. Rugs, upholstery, and deep sofas reflect Yaser's eye as a textile designer and photographer. A fireplace anchors one corner; a long table with wooden benches the other - the kind of table set for long evenings over endless cups of kahwa, the Kashmiri spiced tea of saffron and crushed almonds.

The rooms at Nadis combine Kashmiri craftsmanship with uncluttered contemporary design. Destination

Surrounded by the Zabarwan hills, the drive to Nadis Hotel is as absorbing as the arrival. As Srinagar recedes, chinar trees take over - a blaze of orange, red and gold in autumn, a steady green in summer. Nadis is in Harwan Village, past Dal Lake, where painted houseboats line the edges of the water and shikaras move quietly between them. Harwan is the gateway to Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary and the starting point for the trek up Mahadev Mountain, the highest peak in the Srinagar range. The Mughal gardens are a short drive. And just above the Harwan Garden, largely unknown to visitors, stand the ruins of a Buddhist monastery where the 4th Buddhist Council of the Mahayana tradition convened in the 1st or 2nd century CE - the gathering from which Buddhist philosophy spread into Tibet, China, and Central Asia. The philosopher Nagarjuna lived and worked here.

Design

Nadis was conceived as a modern interpretation of a Kashmiri chalet, rooted in regional craft traditions and climate-sensitive design. Cedarwood flooring, handcrafted Khatamband ceilings, natural insulation, and centralised heating systems respond to Srinagar’s long winters while maintaining warmth and efficiency.

Interiors remain restrained, using muted tones, Kashmiri detailing, vintage accents, and large openings that draw in light and views of the surrounding landscape. Gardens, orchards, and outdoor sit-outs remain integral to the property's experience.

Born into a family deeply rooted in Kashmir’s luxury shawl manufacturing, Yaser Shaw is a multifaceted individual whose passions include trekking, textile design, travel, and photography. Nadis - meaning channels of flowing energy in Sanskrit – is his creative conduit; a place designed by his own hand, with his photographs on the walls, for guests to reconnect with the valley on its terms.

A garden, library, restaurant, and a tea house tucked in the corner of the garden make for comfortable days and the particular pleasure of being somewhere that is both calming and energising.

Dining

Dining at Nadis is an invitation into a Kashmiri home. Many of the recipes came from Yaser's mother, passed on personally to the cook, and they carry that inheritance: saffron, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, local dried fruits, nuts, and mountain herbs from the hotel's own garden. Expect yakhni pulao, khameeri bread, and homemade strawberry preserve at breakfast. In winter, kahwa - gently spiced, warming, and good for everything from cold mornings to restless minds - is served all day, which is exactly the right frequency.

Experience

At Nadis, the experiences are guided by Yaser's own knowledge of the landscape. Guided treks personally scouted by him - Naranag, the Great Lakes route, the ascent of Mahadev Peak - take guests into terrain most visitors never reach. Dal Lake is minutes away; a shikara on the water is best taken early, before the afternoon crowds, when the floating markets are just waking. The local bazaar offers pashmina shawls, papier-mâché, dried fruits, and handcrafted crafts. Yaser organises intimate evenings at Nadis - book readings, music soirées, textile programmes - that bring the valley's culture inside.

Dal Lake

Just moments from Nadis, Dal Lake is best in the early morning. The houseboats sit still in their own reflection, and the floating markets are just opening. Drift on a shikara through the channels, past vendors selling vegetables and lotus flowers by boat, and watch the city awaken.
