Nearly eighty years after it was first built, Nimmu House was restored and reimagined as a sustainable hospitality initiative. The project brought together Tibetologists, art historians, conservation specialists, local artisans, designers, and hospitality professionals.

The restoration relied entirely on locally sourced materials and traditional methods, ensuring that the building retained its architectural integrity while adapting to contemporary use. Today, Nimmu House serves as both a working retreat and a carefully conserved example of Ladakh’s built heritage.

Use Nimmu House to acclimatise at a leisurely pace. At a lower altitude than Leh, it allows you to explore Likir and Alchi monasteries and the Indus-Zanskar confluence before you head deeper into Ladakh.

Destination

Nimoo is a Ladakhi village set amid the Indus Valley, where the Indus opens beneath the Karakorum and Zanskar ranges. Sitting at a relatively low altitude of 3,100 metres, it makes an excellent base for Himalayan treks.

Tucked within this landscape is Nimmu House, a restored Ladhaki home surrounded by apricot, apple and walnut trees. Nearby monasteries and the Indus-Zanskar confluence anchor the region in both history and geography.

Design

Nimmu House was originally constructed by Zildar Rinchen Namgyal of Ladakh’s Nangso family and reflects traditional Ladakhi architectural principles. Its outward-sloping exterior walls were inspired by structures encountered during a pilgrimage to Lhasa, making the house a distinctive cultural marker in the region.

The restoration preserved these defining features, including structural form, material use, and spatial planning. Interiors remain rooted in Ladakhi design language, allowing the building to respond naturally to climate and environment while providing comfort to travellers.

Nimmu House is hosted by Indrani, whose work reflects a strong commitment to Ladakh’s cultural continuity. With a wide range of interests and extensive travel experience, she brings both global perspective and local sensitivity to the property.

Together with her husband Vikram, a trekker, naturalist, and outdoor person, they shape an environment where guests engage with Ladakh through culture, landscape, and lived experiences.

Dining

Central to your stay experience at Nimmu House is the food. Much of what is served comes straight from the property’s own orchard and kitchen gardens, along with produce from nearby farms and dairy products from privately owned local cows.

Breakfast is a relaxed affair, with fresh juices and salads made from homegrown fruits and vegetables, traditional Ladakhi bread served with homemade butter and jams, and familiar comforts such as eggs and pancakes. Lunch and dinner are offered as fixed three-course menus showcasing a diverse range of dishes.

Guests can sample Ladakhi classics like momos, chow mein and thukpa, along with Asian, Indian, Mediterranean and French-influenced dishes. Vegetarian preferences are well accommodated, and meals reflect both season and place.

Experiences

Start your day with yoga and meditation classes held daily at the Yoga Shala, supporting acclimatisation and physical balance. Guided village tour along the river introduces everyday Ladakhi life, often concluding with a traditional butter tea in a local home.

Trekking routes across the Himalayan terrain offer wide landscapes and gradual elevation. River rafting provides a different perspective of the valley. Guests may join cooking sessions to learn local cuisine or work with a village potter to create simple handmade objects.

Visit the monasteries

Situated not far from Nimmu, Likir Monastery is among Ladakh’s older and best-preserved monasteries, renowned for its towering Buddha statue and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Alchi Monastery stands on flat ground and is known for its exquisite woodcarvings and some of the region’s oldest wall paintings.
