Green Weddings

.

We called Minakshi Pandey of Waste Warriors to seek her opinion on ‘Green Weddings’ and she came back with a vehement ‘Indian weddings can never be green, look at the guest list.’ However we discovered that, in the restrictions imposed by the pandemic was a great opportunity for people to shrink the guest list, one of the most important drivers towards envisaging a green event. Some of the RARE Hotels are perfect in location, spread and number of keys for small events that are conscious about the guest numbers, décor, theme and banqueting.

From River Boats on the Brahmaputra or Ganges, to a farm house or a Castle outside Jaipur to lodges in the wild, beach side retreats, plantations and restored heritage residences in temple towns; there are so many opportunities for creative planning if you are committed to going back to private and intimate celebrations of life events.  A true green event by Assam Bengal Navigation with a River Boat parked in the middle of a sacred river was planned and executed during pandemic times. The bride Antara’s recent wedding on the Charaidew II was a small celebration in the middle of the mightly Brahmaputra, conscious and light footed.

“On a gorgeous clear day, we held the Vedic fire ceremony as we were cruising up the river surrounded by the mighty Himalayan waters of the Brahmaputra, blessed by nature’s bounty and a small gathering of well-wishers. we couldn’t have asked for a more magical and meaningful setting for our wedding!” - Antara Phookan

And she shares…
.
  • Plan ‘to consciously’ include special details for the special people in your life. On a river cruise ship, a small group of guests truly engaged in celebrating your special occasion.
  • You will support local artisans if you choose a specially-designed, handwoven saree or something beautiful and meaningful passed down from a close family member. Antara wore her mother Jahanabi Phookan’s old saree while her younger sister had her bridal outfit specially designed for her by local weavers that they support.
  • Personalise details and champion conservation and inspire your guests with signages with well thought out poems and quotes.
  • Gift hampers in each cabin were a collection of local produce and handlooms, things that they can use, a fond memory of a special occasion.
  • Natural is beautiful and fresh flowers were used for the mandap, keeping it minimal so that there were 360 degree views of the magnificent Brahmaputra river. Flowers used for the wedding could be reused later to decorate your home or made into potpourri.
  • Food & beverage at weddings is where the waste is maximum. Wholesome cuisine that was local, fresh and waste free was highlighted. Water dispensers, glass bottles, areca or tamul plates and cutlery and terracotta cups which are easily bio-degradable were used.
  • Entertainment was engaging and fun as local troupes performed folk dance to the gentle beating of drums and lilting folk songs.
