Green Weddings
We called Minakshi Pandey of Waste Warriors to seek her opinion on ‘Green Weddings’ and she came back with a vehement ‘Indian weddings can never be green, look at the guest list.’ However we discovered that, in the restrictions imposed by the pandemic was a great opportunity for people to shrink the guest list, one of the most important drivers towards envisaging a green event. Some of the RARE Hotels are perfect in location, spread and number of keys for small events that are conscious about the guest numbers, décor, theme and banqueting.

Antara wore her mother Jahanabi Phookan’s old saree while her younger sister had her bridal outfit specially designed for her by local weavers that they support.

Gift hampers in each cabin were a collection of local produce and handlooms, things that they can use, a fond memory of a special occasion.
Natural is beautiful and fresh flowers were used for the mandap, keeping it minimal so that there were 360 degree views of the magnificent Brahmaputra river. Flowers used for the wedding could be reused later to decorate your home or made into potpourri.
Food & beverage at weddings is where the waste is maximum. Wholesome cuisine that was local, fresh and waste free was highlighted. Water dispensers, glass bottles, areca or tamul plates and cutlery and terracotta cups which are easily bio-degradable were used.
Entertainment was engaging and fun as local troupes performed folk dance to the gentle beating of drums and lilting folk songs.
