Sustainability Story of Bagh Villas

Bagh Villas stands in Kanha’s forest country with a rare understanding of what wilderness hospitality should be: an invitation to enter the landscape without interrupting its intelligence. Its Pinwheel story is one of energy efficiency, water conservation, waste discipline, biodiversity regeneration, local employment, respectful cultural interpretation, and light-footprint living.

The property was designed to draw on natural light and ventilation, reducing dependence on artificial systems. Energy-efficient appliances, LED lights, evaporative air coolers, inverter backup, solar water heating, insulated hot-water systems, and nearly 100 KW of photovoltaic solar panels reduce energy demand, with surplus electricity fed back into the grid.

Water is treated as a living cycle. Rainwater harvesting channels water into the lake, recharging groundwater and creating a perennial waterbody for wildlife. UV filtration reduces pool chemicals, greywater and laundry water are directed to soak pits, and RO reject water and air-conditioning condensate are used to recharge groundwater.

Waste management is equally considered. RO-filtered water is served in glass or metal bottles, plastic bin liners are avoided, beeswax paper replaces cling film, cloth bags are used for purchases, and kitchen storage is largely glass-based. Baked goods are made in-house to reduce packaging, waste is segregated, old linen is reused, biodegradable waste is composted, and glass bottles are given to villagers for reuse.

The land itself tells the most powerful story. What was once bare has regenerated through the planting of more than 15,000 native bamboos, 500 sal trees, and other native flora. Invasive species have been removed, and naturalists are trained to interpret and respect the environment. Safari vehicles are regularly serviced to reduce pollution and noise.

Most staff come from the local area and live close to the camp. Local materials, organic kitchen gardens, sun-dried surplus vegetables, eco-friendly detergents, cycling, walking experiences, and respectful village visits make the property’s footprint lighter. Guests are invited into community life carefully, with guides ensuring that local lifestyles are not disturbed.
